Discover Chargeback Reason Codes

Discover Chargeback Codes

Chargeback Reason Codes for Discover

Following is the list of Chargeback Reason Codes used by Discover:

Discover, like American Express, operates as both the card network and the primary card issuer for its cardholders. This closed-loop structure means Discover has direct oversight of dispute decisions, similar to Amex. Discover's reason code system uses four-digit numeric codes with two-letter abbreviations (e.g., 4553 RM, 4754 DA) — the letter abbreviation often appears in chargeback notifications alongside the numeric code and provides a quick category reference.

Discover's dispute process is generally considered merchant-friendly relative to Amex, with response windows of 20–45 days depending on the dispute category. Discover also has a pre-dispute inquiry process called a Retrieval Request for some codes — where Discover asks for transaction documentation before formally filing a chargeback, giving you an opportunity to resolve the issue before it becomes a chargeback of record.

Understanding Discover Chargeback Categories

Fraud (4594 CR)

4594 CR (Cancelled Reservation) — despite the name, this code is used for fraud disputes related to transactions where the cardholder claims they cancelled a reservation or service but were charged anyway, or where a fraudulent transaction occurred in a reservation context. Documentation showing the cardholder's original booking, the cancellation policy disclosed at booking, and any cancellation confirmation (or lack thereof) forms your response. For general unauthorized transaction fraud, Discover uses the UA codes in the Authorization category.

Authorization Errors (4752 DA, 4753, 4754 DA)

4752 DA (Declined Authorization) means the transaction was processed after a declined authorization response — a clear procedural error that is difficult to defend if the decline was genuine. 4754 (No Authorization) covers transactions processed without obtaining an authorization at all. These codes are almost entirely preventable: ensure your payment system never processes a transaction after receiving a decline response, and configure your gateway to always require online authorization for card-present and card-not-present transactions alike.

Processing Errors (4534 DP, 4550 CD, 4586 AW)

4534 DP (Duplicate Processing) means the transaction was processed more than once. Respond with transaction records demonstrating the charge appeared only once, or if the duplicate did occur, confirm the credit has been issued. 4550 CD (Credit Posted as Debit) is a straightforward processing reversal — the merchant charged instead of credited. 4586 AW (Altered Amount) indicates the transaction amount on the cardholder's statement differs from what they authorized — respond with the original signed receipt or authorization record showing the correct amount.

Cardholder Disputes (4540 UA, 4541 AP, 4553 RM, 4555 RN)

4540 UA (Unauthorized Purchase) is Discover's primary unauthorized transaction code for card-not-present fraud. 4541 AP (Automatic Payment) covers recurring billing disputes — the cardholder claims the recurring charge was unauthorized or that they cancelled. Like Visa's code 41 and Mastercard's 4841, this is the dominant code for subscription businesses. 4553 RM (Quality of Goods or Services) covers not-as-described and defective merchandise disputes — respond with product descriptions, delivery confirmation, and customer communications. 4555 RN (Additional Request/Non-Receipt of Credit) is the Discover equivalent of Amex C02 — the cardholder claims a credit wasn't applied; respond with your refund records.

Non-Receipt (4755)

4755 (Non-Receipt of Goods or Services) is Discover's non-delivery code. Signed delivery confirmation, tracking data showing successful delivery, and any post-delivery customer communication are your core response documents. For services, documentation of service delivery — completion records, access logs, customer sign-off — serves the same purpose.

Request for Information (4502 IC, 4554 NC)

4502 IC (Illegible Sales Data) and 4554 NC (Not Classified) are information request codes. 4502 typically means the transaction documentation you submitted was unreadable or incomplete — respond with a clean copy of the relevant records. These codes often precede a more substantive chargeback if the documentation doesn't resolve the issue, so respond thoroughly even though these aren't yet formal chargebacks of record.

Responding to Discover Chargebacks

Discover's response window varies by dispute category — generally 20 days for fraud codes and up to 45 days for other categories. As with all networks, your response must directly address the specific code. A thorough first response is especially important given Discover's closed-loop structure — there is less opportunity for back-and-forth than in Visa's multi-party dispute resolution process.

If you're seeing elevated Discover dispute rates, the same prevention principles apply as with other networks: chargeback prevention monitoring works across all card networks and intercepts disputes before they formalize, fraud screening reduces unauthorized transaction chargebacks at the source, and clear billing descriptors and easy cancellation processes are the highest-leverage operational improvements for subscription and recurring billing merchants.
